GTA 6 Trailer 3: every money system it confirmed

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look aired on Thursday August 27 and it was a real gameplay reveal, about 27 minutes of it, captured on a PlayStation 5. Everyone else is covering the cinematics. This is the money breakdown: every earning system Rockstar actually showed, and the one big thing it pointedly did not.

The short version: GTA 6 showed an active crime economy. Robbery, vehicle theft and fencing, and heists. It did not show a business you buy that earns while you are away. Money is also on the critical path now, because some story missions gate on how much you have earned. Release date is unchanged at November 19, 2026.

Every money system Rockstar showed

These are systems visible in the footage or stated in the previews that ran alongside it. No payout figures were given for any of them, so nothing below is a rate. It is a description of how earning works.

SystemWhat was shownWhy it matters for money
Robbery risk and rewardBlow a safe open and it is fast but it damages what is inside. Find the combination instead and you keep the full value, but every extra minute raises the chance police arrive before you leave.Speed costs you value. The patient route pays more per job when you can afford the risk.
WAINK vehicle scannerA phone app that reads a car's value, registration cost, lock state, alarm and GPS tracker before you touch it.Lets you price a theft before committing. Expensive cars are in higher security tiers and need better tools.
FencesStolen jewellery, vehicles and valuables go through specialist fences rather than a single generic seller. Vehicle fences also tip you off about cars worth taking, including from police impound lots.Your sale price depends on who you sell to, so the fence is part of the payout and not an afterthought.
Vehicle condition and trackersDamage cuts resale value, and Vice City's narrow roads make a clean delivery genuinely hard. Higher end cars report their position to police until you outrun or dump them. The drive home is part of the job. A wrecked car is a discounted car.
Criminal ProfileThe game tracks how you work. Unnecessary violence and property destruction build one kind of reputation, while clean and efficient robberies improve your standing as a professional.Being sloppy has a cost that is tracked over time, not just a wanted level that expires.
Shared bank accountJason and Lucia share one bank account and one arsenal on heists. They can also hit robbery locations alone or as a pair, and working together feeds their relationship. There is one balance to grow, so there is no splitting income between characters the way GTA 5 did.
Story gates on cashMoney is more important to the campaign than in previous GTA games. Some story missions require you to have earned enough before you can advance.Earning is not optional side content. It is on the critical path through the story.

The gap nobody else is leading with

Every earning system above is active. You do a job, you get paid. Nothing Rockstar showed was a property you buy once that pays you while you are offline or doing something else, which is the entire shape of the GTA Online economy: nightclubs, bunkers, acid labs, agencies.

Be careful how much weight that carries. Twenty seven minutes of footage not containing a business empire is not proof that GTA 6 has no businesses. Rockstar showed the opening hours of a story, and passive income systems are exactly the kind of thing a studio holds back. What it does mean is that every GTA 6 passive income plan currently on the internet, including the ones we have written, is still built on expectation rather than evidence. We label ours that way and we will keep doing so until Rockstar shows otherwise.

What this changes about planning your first week

Two things worth acting on. First, money now gates story progress, so the old GTA advice of rushing the campaign and worrying about cash later does not fit this game. Earning is the campaign. Second, the detail in the theft systems, security tiers, the WAINK scanner, tools that unlock as you progress, means the fastest early car is not the most expensive car. It is the most expensive car you actually have the equipment to take and the ability to deliver undamaged.

Our day-one money plan is written against exactly this and is updated for what the Extended Look confirmed.

What Game Informer’s cover story added

Game Informer’s 14-page GTA 6 cover story filled in the robbery ladder the Extended Look showed in pieces: five loose tiers of free-roam robbery, from local stores (convenience stores, phone shops, payday lenders) to jewelry stores, banks, criminal compounds and armored vans, with story heists on top. It also confirmed how money is held: cash you carry, a bank balance in the BuckMe app, and stolen goods in a duffel bag that are worth nothing until a fence buys them. Still no payout figures. The full breakdown is in the GTA 6 heists guide.

Email

We are building the GTA 6 money rankings the same way we built the GTA Online ones: real numbers, sourced, no guesses. One email when payout data is real, and nothing before that.

Meanwhile, GTA Online still pays

GTA 6 has no confirmed payout figures and no confirmed multiplayer. GTA Online has both, right now, and Take-Two has said it keeps running after November. If you want to be rich on day one of GTA 6, the money you carry in is the money you earn in GTA Online between now and then.

Frequently asked questions

What did the GTA 6 Extended Look actually show?

About 27 minutes of gameplay footage captured on a PlayStation 5, aired on Netflix on Thursday August 27, 2026 at 3pm ET and posted free to Rockstar's YouTube channel and the Grand Theft Auto VI website at 9pm ET the same day. It was a gameplay reveal, which had been reported beforehand but not confirmed by Rockstar until it aired.

Is it actually called Trailer 3?

No. Rockstar has never used that name. The official title is Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look. Trailer 3 is what the community called it for months, which is why you probably searched for it. They are the same thing.

How do you make money in GTA 6?

From what Rockstar showed: robbing stores and businesses, stealing and fencing vehicles, and bank heists. Money is explicitly more important to the campaign than in previous GTA games, and some story missions require you to have accumulated enough cash before you can advance. Jason and Lucia share one bank account and one arsenal on heists.

Did the Extended Look confirm buyable businesses or passive income in GTA 6?

No, and this is the most important gap for anyone planning a money route. Every earning system Rockstar showed is active crime: robberies, vehicle theft and fencing, and heists. Nothing shown was a business you buy that pays you while you are away, in the way GTA Online nightclubs and bunkers do. That does not prove such systems are absent, only that 27 minutes of footage did not contain one. Treat any GTA 6 passive income plan as unconfirmed.

What is the WAINK app in GTA 6?

A phone app that scans a vehicle before you try to take it. The readout shows the car's estimated value, what it would cost to register it in your name, whether it is locked, whether it has an active alarm, and whether it carries a GPS tracker. It turns car theft into a decision about whether a given car is worth the risk rather than a reflex.

Does GTA 6 have a six star wanted level?

Yes. The six star wanted system from GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas returns, up from the five star maximum in GTA 5 and GTA Online. Police also identify you by your clothing and by security camera footage, so masks and stashing a change of clothes in a vehicle both matter.

Does this change the GTA 6 release date?

No. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The footage was captured on a PlayStation 5. There is no first person mode at launch.

Will there be a GTA 6 Online?

Rockstar has not announced one, and nothing in the Extended Look addressed multiplayer. GTA 6 ships as a single player game on November 19. Take-Two has said GTA Online will continue to be supported alongside it, so the GTA Online economy is not going anywhere on launch day.
