Digital: the PlayStation Store or the Microsoft Store, on the account you’ll actually play on. Prices are identical everywhere digital, so there is nothing to shop around for beyond how you pay (more on that below).

The physical copy has no disc
Rockstar confirmed the physical edition ships with a download code in the box. There is no disc. You redeem the code on the PlayStation or Microsoft store and download the full game, exactly like a digital buyer, including the November 12 preload.
That changes the money math of going physical. You cannot lend it, sell it used, or skip the download with a disc drive. A boxed copy is the digital game plus a plastic case, so it only makes sense when a retailer prices it below the store price or you want the box on a shelf.
Every pre-order bonus, and what it’s actually worth
Vintage Vice City Pack (every pre-order before November 20, both editions): a ’55 Vapid Stanier, the Shore Court Garage near Ocean Beach with a weapon locker and a drop point for fencing stolen goods, retro outfits and hairstyles for Jason and Lucia, and a tropical weapon pattern. The honest read: the garage and its fence drop are the functional pieces, the rest is cosmetic. Nice to have, not worth changing plans for.

The cheapest legit way to pay
Digital store prices are fixed, so the only real lever is what you pay for the credit. PSN and Xbox gift cards regularly sell below face value on gift card marketplaces; the discount moves daily, but even a few percent off a €79.99 game is money back for zero effort. Two rules: the card’s region must match your account’s region (platform credit is region-locked), and buy from an established marketplace, not a random reseller.
For boxed copies, retailers occasionally undercut the digital price or bundle gift cards. That’s legitimate, just remember you’re buying a download code.
One more quiet saver: digital pre-orders can usually be cancelled for a refund before release on both stores. If a better route shows up later, a gift card deal or a retail promo, you can cancel and re-buy. Check your store’s policy before counting on it.
Preload starts November 12, have the space ready
Preloading opens November 12 at midnight local time, one week before launch, for digital pre-orders and redeemed physical codes alike. The game stays locked until November 19; preloading just means you play at launch instead of watching a progress bar.
Rockstar has not published an official install size. Realistic estimates put it around 150 to 200 GB plus a day-one patch, so treat that as the space to clear. And ignore the viral 676.7 GB screenshot: it was a fake built on an Xbox One listing, for a game that isn’t on Xbox One.
Should you pre-order at all?
Digital copies do not sell out, and pre-ordering buys you exactly two things: the Vintage Vice City Pack and launch-night readiness. There is no discount for being early, and the bonus deadline is November 20, so you can hold your money until the night before launch and still get everything. If you already know you’re playing day one, pre-order digital whenever you like; if you’re not sure, waiting costs you nothing.
